Approximately 80% of your immune system is in your gut. Therefore, if you do not have a balanced microbiome, the good and bad bacteria residing in the gut, and a strong intestinal lining, you will not be able to truly heal your body.
It is the term used for increased intestinal permeability. Years of eating a poor diet, stress, toxins, and an unbalanced microbiome (the good and bad bacteria in the gut) can cause the lining of the gut to begin to weaken. When the lining of the gut is unhealthy, the once tight junctions begin to loosen, allowing larger particles such as bacteria, toxins, and undigested food out into the blood stream. This leads to chronic inflammation and an overburdened immune system. In some cases, an autoimmune response occurs such as Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Research has shown that those with autoimmune disorders more than likely suffer from a leaky gut although it has not been proven that it is a cause of the condition.
The keys to heal your leaky gut include removing the triggers that are damaging the intestinal lining, eat nutrient dense whole foods to repair the damage, and re-balance the good and bacteria inside your gut so they can do their job efficiently.
